Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
Modes of study
- You will be required to attend a multi-day design intensive activity as part of Impact Lab 1: Place.
- You will be required to participate in group project-based learning or work integrated learning, which may be conducted off campus.
- Some units will require completion of specific Health and Safety Inductions before you will be able to undertake activities in workshops and performance facilities or use specialist equipment. See the CI Health and Safety Blackboard site.
Work integrated learning
You are required to undertake 30 days of approved construction managment work experience as part of your Professional Practice core unit. More information available from the Work Integrated Learning (WIL) placements website.
Study overseas
Study overseas while gaining credit towards your QUT degree with one of our worldwide exchange partners. Overseas study can be for one or two semesters (or during the semester break) and the units you take can be in either degree area, depending on how they match with your QUT course. Early exit

Pathways to further study
On successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to apply for entry into DE83 Master of Architecture. This 2-year course will be offered from 2022.
On successful completion of this course, you will be eligible to apply for entry into the Master of Teaching (Secondary) or Master of Philosophy, provided you meet the entry requirements.
Note: Entry to graduate-entry teacher education courses usually requires that you have studied a range of units in a different subject area to the main focus of your degree. This forms the basis of your second teaching area. Check the entry requirements for specific teaching courses.
Professional recognition
Design component: Graduates qualify for membership of the Design Institute of Australia (DIA), the professional body for Australian designers.
Graduates of an accredited 2-year Master of Architecture course meet the academic requirements for membership of the Australian Institute of Architects (AIA). Graduates who have also completed two years of practical architectural experience (at least one year postgraduate) will be eligible to undertake the Architectural Practice Examination which, if successful, will enable the graduate to be eligible for registration with any Board of Architects in Australia.
Urban and Regional Planning component: Graduates are eligible for membership of the Planning Institute of Australia (PIA)
Course Structure
In order to complete this course, you must complete a total of 480 credit points, made up of 192 credit points from the Bachelor of Design (Architecture) and 288 credit points from the Bachelor of Urban Development (Honours) (Urban and Regional Planning). You will study design and urban development units in your first four years, and concentrate on urban development studies for the remainder of this course.
Design component
In order to complete the Architecture major, you must complete a total of 240 credit points of core units comprising:
- Architecture, Impact Lab, and Design foundation units (totalling 192 credit points), and
- 4 units (48 credit points) completed as part of the Urban and Regional Planning component**.
Urban Development component
The Urban and Regional Planning Major component requires the completion of 288 credit points (24 units) consisting of:
- Core Urban Development units totalling 72 credit points, including 1 Professional Practice unit (12 credit points) and 1 Research Methods unit (12 credit points);
- Urban and Regional Planning discipline units totalling 192 credit points; and
- A Capstone Project (24 credit points).
**The following four units are completed as part of the Urban and Regional Planning component and will contribute to the completion requirements of both courses:
- DYB113 (will apply in place of UXB100)
- DAB202 (will apply in place of UXB330)
- UXB130 (will apply in place of DYB114)
- UXB301 (will apply in place of Impact Lab Option row (DYB301, KKB341, KKB350))
