Course structures
EN55 Master of Professional Engineering is a two-year degree designed to align with Engineers Australia level 1 core competencies. Depending upon the level achieved in your undergraduate studies, you can complete on a 1.5-year program (144 credit points) or a 2-year program (192 credit points).
Our electrical discipline offers majors in:
- Electrical
- Electrical and Management.
To graduate you will need to complete 84 credit points of core units including: a capstone research project which includes a 60 day work placement, research methods unit, professional practice units including Project Management, an advanced discipline unit and a electrical engineering design unit; plus 108 credit points of major specialisation units for the 2 year program, or 60cps of major specialisation units in the 1.5 year program.
Professional recognition
This course is fully accredited by Engineers Australia. Professional accreditation allows graduates to work as a professional engineer in countries that are signatories to the Washington Accord.
Work integrated learning
You are required to undertake 60 days of approved work experience in the Engineering environment as part of your Work Integrated Learning. You must undertake a minimum 30 days of engineering work completing duties under your major and be supervised by a professional engineer. There are some flexibility around the remining 30 days of work placement if you wish to undertake non-engineering experience. Your work placement will be assessed in the final year of your course as part of your capstone research project.
Advanced standing (credit)
1.5 year entry
If you have completed four-year full-time (or equivalent) bachelor degree in the electrical engineering discipline with a minimum GPA of 4.00 (on QUT’s 7-point scale) you will be granted 48 credit points (1 semester) of general advanced standing upon:
- Offer if you are domestic student
- Upon request if you are an international student
If you did not want this advanced standing when you applied and then later wish to be considered for it then Apply for credit for non-QUT study. To avoid delays, please ensure and include your non-QUT academic record and award certificate.
No further advanced standing will be granted for degree or honours degree studies.
Graduate Certificate in Communication for Engineering
If you succesfully complete Graduate Certificate in Communication for Engineering (EN60) with a minimum GPA of 4.00 (on QUT’s 7-point scale) you will receive 24cps of advanced standing upon progression to this course.
If not applied with 2 weeks of your acceptance then Apply for credit for prior QUT study
Other advanced standing
Besides the above, advanced standing will be only be considered for relevant:
- postgraduate (graduate certificate, graduate diploma, masters and doctorate) studies; and/or
- work experience gained after completion of your engineering degree (or higher) qualification.
Please visit Credit for prior learning - Student - QUT Portal for more information.
Modes of study
This course is available for part-time study for February and Mid-year entry.
With part-time study your course is still required to be completed within the allocated maximum course completion time for your award level.
For your part-time study plan you can be guided by the course structures provided for full time study (February or Mid-year entry) by following a similar progression and unit selection sequence and considering any pre-requisite knowledge requirements.
Pathways to further study
The EN55 Master of Professional Engineering is located at Level 9 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF).
Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).
