Overview
A Chemical and Sustainable Process Engineer develops and optimises industrial processes to make the huge range of products on which modern society depends. Chemical and Sustainable Process engineering involves refining, renewing, or modifying raw materials. In today's world, processing efficiently, sustainably and with a low energy footprint is key to business operations and profitability.
Professional recognition
This course has professional accreditation from Engineers Australia (EA). EA is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which permits graduates to work in various countries across the world. This course is recognised internationally in the engineering profession, giving QUT graduates more career opportunities overseas. Full professional accreditation from Engineers Australia has been given for this course.
Work integrated learning
Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded in the curriculum, and is a core component for all engineering students.
WIL allows you to graduate with a portfolio of professional skills that provides evidence of your professional competencies. As part of the course requirements, you need to undertake 60 days of approved work experience in the Chemical and Sustainable Process engineering environment under the supervision of a Professional Engineer. Please start planning your WIL in your second year of studies. After achieving 192 credit points in your single degree, you are eligible for an engineering related placement. For questions or assistance, please contact the Faculty of Engineering WIL team at engineering.wil@qut.edu.au.
Study areas
In this degree, students have the opportunity to pursue complementary studies by undertaking an aligned engineering minor. After completing their first year, students can choose their engineering minor from the available options within their chosen major.
Pathways to further study
The (EN01) Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is located at Level 8 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Graduates may be eligible for discipline-relevant masters - and/or doctoral-level programs.
QUT You
QUT You provides interdisciplinary experiences that enhance critical and creative thinking, self-awareness, and digital skills, preparing students to create positive societal change.
You are required to complete QUT You units in your course – find out more about QUT You.
Course information
Course updates and changes to units and study areas may affect enrolment requirements. If your study plan is affected, it will be updated accordingly. For questions or assistance, please contact the Faculty of Engineering at engineering@qut.edu.au.
To complete your degree within the standard timeframe (4 years for full-time or 8 years for part-time), it is recommended to follow the provided study plan as not all units are offered every semester. This will ensure that you satisfy all prerequisites where applicable.
Study costs
Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

Study Area Description
Mechanical engineering turns energy into power and motion. Mechanical engineers design, create, improve and maintain systems and machinery that are used for private and commercial purposes. They keep pace with technology and act as an interface between technology and society, playing an essential role contributing to the sustainability of the environment and future development of industry. Mechanical engineering interlinks closely with other areas of engineering and applies knowledge of materials, energy and structures.
The Mechanical Second Major 96cp (EN01SMJ-MECHNCL) compromises:
- At least 36 credit points selected from Advanced Mechanical Engineering Strand
- And the remaining credit points selected from Foundation Mechanical Engineering Strand
Please note this second major is offered only to Mechatronics, Medical Engineering and Process Engineering students.
If you are majoring in Electrical Engineering , Civil Engineering, Computer and Software Systems major, Electrical and Aerospace and are willing to take Mechanical second major you will need to choose Mechanical second major (EN01SMJ-MECHENG) instead.

Study area description
Electrical engineers work with electrical energy in all its forms: from tiny electrons or microchips to large-scale electrical power generators. In addition to designing new products, electrical engineers construct, operate, and maintain a variety of electrical systems and equipment. Electrical and electronic engineers can specialise in different areas such as power generation, transmission and distribution; communications and electrical equipment manufacturing, or a specialty within one of these areas such as aviation electronics, satellite communications or industrial robotics. Many electrical and electronics engineers also work in areas closely related to computers. Electrical Engineers often work together with senior administrators, civil and mechanical engineers, computer scientists or other professionals in the business, building and construction industries.
