Scholarships

Overview

Electrical and aerospace engineering involves design, development, manufacture, and maintenance work on the electronic systems of military and civilian aeroplanes, helicopters, spacecraft, satellites, and uninhabited aerial vehicles (UAVs). If you are interested in how things work, space and flight, technology, electronics, and aircraft systems, an electrical and aerospace career could be for you.

Work integrated learning

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded in the curriculum, and is a core component for all engineering students.

WIL allows you to graduate with a portfolio of professional skills that provides evidence of your professional competencies. As part of the course requirements, you need to undertake 60 days of approved work experience in an electrical and aerospace engineering environment under the supervision of a Professional Engineer. Please start planning your WIL in your second year of studies. After achieving 192 credit points in your single degree, you are eligible for an engineering related placement. Professional recognition

This course has professional accreditation from Engineers Australia (EA). EA is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which permits graduates to work in various countries across the world. This course is recognised internationally in the engineering profession, giving QUT graduates more career opportunities overseas. Full professional accreditation from Engineers Australia has been given for this course.

Study areas

In this degree, students have the opportunity to pursue complementary studies by undertaking an aligned engineering minor. After completing their first year, students can choose their engineering minor from the available options within their chosen major.

Pathways to further study

The (EN01) Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) is located at Level 8 of the Australian Qualifications Framework (AQF). Graduates may be eligible for discipline-relevant masters - and/or doctoral-level programs.

Course Structures

For students commencing from 2025, your QUT Bachelor of Engineering (Honours) degree consists of 32 units (384 credit points) arranged as follows:

(a)   Core units (96 credit points) consisting of:

60 credit points of First Year units:

  • Three core engineering units (36 credit points)
  • An introductory unit in engineering mathematics (12 credit points), chosen from a list of two units depending on the student's mathematical preparedness
  • Engineering Mathematics and Statistics (12 credit points)

       And 36 credit points of Honours units:

  • Research Methods (12 credit points)
  • Project (24 credit points)

(b)  A Major (216 credit points) consisting of:

  • Eleven bachelor-level major units in the major (132 credit points)
  • Five advanced Honours-level units in the major (60 credit points)
  • Two Discipline Extension Units (24 credit points)

(c)   Complementary Studies (48 credit points) consisting of:

  • An Engineering Minor (a 4-unit set of 48 credit points) from the options for your chosen Major

(d)  Four QUT You units (24 credit points comprising 4 x 6 credit point units) of your choice.

Study area description

Computer and software systems engineers are specialist software engineers that have a deep understanding of the underlying computer systems and electronic devices on which their software will execute. Such expertise is required to program operating systems, communication software and software embedded in devices ranging from mobile devices to GPSs, satellites and aircraft flight systems. The discipline combines principles of computer science with the rigour and problem-solving skills of engineering.

Study Area Description

The Mathematical Sciences second major in the Bachelor of Engineering degree provides students with the option to expand their knowledge, skills and experience in mathematical and statistical methodologies and techniques which underpin the large majority of quantitative methods used in the student's major area of study. Engineers need a thorough understanding of algebra and differential equations to find solutions to real-world problems. They also need geometry in solving physical problems involving, for example, planes, angles and design. Further, calculus is needed in solving orbit, optimisation and wave problems, while statistics is needed in designing experiments, quality control, reliability and system design. This second major is therefore vital for developing problem solving skills and thorough understanding of the mathematical principles and laws which describe the physical world.

Electrical engineers work with electrical energy in all its forms: from tiny electrons or microchips to large-scale electrical power generators. In addition to designing new products, electrical engineers construct, operate, and maintain a variety of electrical systems and equipment. Study Area Description

The Nanotechnology minor is designed for physics, chemistry, mechanical engineering and process engineering students with an interest in nanoscience and its applications in nanotechnology. Since nanotechnology is a multi-disciplinary field of research, this minor offers two units dedicated to broadening and/or deepening your skills in physics, engineering and chemistry.
