Overview

Mechatronics engineering is the design and maintenance of machinery with electronic and computer control systems, such as aircraft and power generators, to work in the high-tech fields of automated systems and robotics. It describes a new concept in the world of making value-added products, a skill that is becoming essential across all industrial sectors: manufacturing and process industries, primary production and mining, and the service and health industries. Mechatronics engineering is the hybrid discipline of mechanical engineering, electrical and electronic engineering, and computing. This cutting-edge degree is unique in Australia, and provides you with the combined skills of all these disciplines to enter the growing industry of mechatronics. You will benefit from QUT's close links with local and international industry and, during your study, may be involved in different projects such as QUT Motorsport and the aerospace avionics Uninhabited Aerial Vehicle Outback Challenge.

Work integrated learning

Work Integrated Learning (WIL) is embedded in the curriculum, and is a core component for all engineering students.

WIL allows you to graduate with a portfolio of professional skills that provides evidence of your professional competencies. You are required to undertake 60 days of approved work experience in the engineering environment as part of your Work Integrated Learning.

Professional recognition

This course has professional accreditation from Engineers Australia (EA). EA is a signatory to the Washington Accord, which permits graduates to work in various countries across the world. This course is recognised internationally in the engineering profession, giving QUT graduates more career opportunities overseas. Full professional accreditation from Engineers Australia has been given for this course.

Study costs

Domestic students may need to pay the Student Services and Amenities Fee (SSAF).

Course Structures

The Mechatronics Engineering Major consists of:

Major (192 credit points):

  • One block of eleven major units (132 credit points)
  • Five Advanced Major Honours-level units (60 credit points).

Complementary Studies (96 credit points):

  • One Second Major (an 8-unit set of 96 credit points) OR two Minors (two 4-unit sets of 48 credit points each) from the available range for this Major. If you choose to do two Minors, one of them must be an engineering minor.

Study area description

Computer and software systems engineers are specialist software engineers that have a deep understanding of the underlying computer systems and electronic devices on which their software will execute. Such expertise is required to program operating systems, communication software and software embedded in devices ranging from mobile devices to GPSs, satellites and aircraft flight systems. The discipline combines principles of computer science with the rigour and problem-solving skills of engineering.

Study Area Description

Mechanical engineering turns energy into power and motion. Mechanical engineers design, create, improve and maintain systems and machinery that are used for private and commercial purposes. They keep pace with technology and act as an interface between technology and society, playing an essential role contributing to the sustainability of the environment and future development of industry. Mechanical engineering interlinks closely with other areas of engineering and applies knowledge of materials, energy and structures.

The  Mechanical Second Major 96cp (EN01SMJ-MECHNCL)  compromises:

  • At least 36 credit points selected from Advanced Mechanical Engineering Strand
  • And the remaining credit points selected from Foundation Mechanical Engineering Strand

Please note this second major is offered only to Mechatronics, Medical Engineering and Process Engineering students.

If you are majoring in Electrical Engineering , Civil Engineering, Computer and Software Systems major, Electrical and Aerospace and are willing to take Mechanical second major you will need to choose Mechanical second major (EN01SMJ-MECHENG) instead.

Study area description

Medical engineering involves working with clinicians and medical scientists to design, manufacture and maintain medical equipment to improve health care and medical services. The discipline applies engineering and scientific methods to find solutions to problems in medicine and the life sciences. It may involve developing medical products and different types of equipment used to monitor and treat patients or designing and improving equipment for people with disabilities. Medical engineering integrates engineering principles with human physiology to design, manufacture, install, monitor and maintain medical and surgical equipment.

Applied Economics and Finance Second Major - BSBXSMJ-AEFSEF
Study Area Description

This second major will develop broad economics and finance knowledge applicable to all types of business activities. Economics know-how guides the strategic direction of firms and government to respond to changes in global economic conditions, structural changes within the sector or changes in policy settings from treasury to health and education and everything in between. Finance is a dynamic field, focusing on the borrowing, lending and investing of money by individuals, financial institutions, business and government organisations. You will learn core concepts and skills in finance, including financial instruments and financial analysis. Key concepts and knowledge, problem solving skills, critical and analytical thinking are developed throughout the entire major to enhance employability.

Study area description

Engineers working in process industries develop and optimise industrial processes to make the huge range of products on which modern society depends. This involves refining, renewing or modifying raw materials. In today's world, processing efficiently, sustainably and with a low energy footprint is key to business operations and profitability.

The Chemical Process Engineering Second Major aims to extend the skills and knowledge of engineering graduates from fields other than chemical process engineering to design of equipment, control of industrial processes, develop process control strategies, and operate and upgrade industrial processes.

The following discontinued units still count towards this Second Major:
EGB324 Fundamentals in Numerical Modelling for Engineering (disc 31/12/2020)
EGB424 Advanced Computational Fluid Dynamics (disc 31/12/2020)
Study Area Description

The Mathematical Sciences second major in the Bachelor of Engineering degree provides students with the option to expand their knowledge, skills and experience in mathematical and statistical methodologies and techniques which underpin the large majority of quantitative methods used in the student's major area of study. Engineers need a thorough understanding of algebra and differential equations to find solutions to real-world problems. They also need geometry in solving physical problems involving, for example, planes, angles and design. Further, calculus is needed in solving orbit, optimisation and wave problems, while statistics is needed in designing experiments, quality control, reliability and system design. This second major is therefore vital for developing problem solving skills and thorough understanding of the mathematical principles and laws which describe the physical world.

Study Area Description

Electrical engineers work with electrical energy in all its forms: from tiny electrons or microchips to large-scale electrical power generators. In addition to designing new products, electrical engineers construct, operate, and maintain a variety of electrical systems and equipment. Electrical and electronic engineers can specialise in different areas such as power generation, transmission and distribution; communications and electrical equipment manufacturing, or a specialty within one of these areas such as aviation electronics, satellite communications or industrial robotics. Many electrical and electronics engineers also work in areas closely related to computers. Electrical Engineers often work together with senior administrators, civil and mechanical engineers, computer scientists or other professionals in the business, building and construction industries
